A few friends, one shared intention. On the shore of Lake Como, letting architecture, living and the people worth keeping meet each other slowly.
The story of VILLA AURELAGO began more than a decade ago, with an encounter nobody had planned.
That year Winson Chen travelled to Italy with his family, about to set out on a Mediterranean cruise. Before boarding, he and a friend called in at Lake Como on impulse. What was only an unscheduled pause in a journey became the landscape he would carry with him for years afterwards.
The lake opens northward in two long arms, leaning into the foothills of the Alps and taking in the water that comes down from them. Along its shores, villas and estates are scattered among small towns, gardens and green slopes; morning mist, light on the water and the slow shift of afternoon shadow make it all feel a little unreal. For Winson that sense of being somewhere outside the world came not only from the scenery, but from the unhurried, quiet pace of life here.
He has returned almost every year since. Sometimes to the towns he already knows, sometimes along the shore to find lanes he has never walked. Stay after stay, the first astonishment settled into a deeper attachment, and one thought grew clearer: to spend the second half of his life among this water and these mountains, living with his family, gathering old friends, watching the seasons turn outside the window.
VILLA AURELAGO took shape, gradually, out of that intention.
Between owning a building and truly understanding one there is still a long road. Over five years the team has worked through restoration, partial renovation and, in places, rebuilding, weighing every room again and again between keeping what was there and meeting what living asks of it today. Comfort, privacy and quality of life guided the work; so did the character of the architecture itself, and its relationship with the shore, which deserved the same careful keeping.
For Winson these houses carry what he imagines his life to come will be. Through long and attentive care we hope each of them keeps a story of its own — and that the chance meeting of more than a decade ago becomes, in the years ahead, an ordinary day one can return to again and again.
Five years is an accumulation of sustained effort, discussion and choosing. What now looks effortless rests on a great deal that is not easily seen.

Restoration starts with understanding what is already there. What deserves to stay, what needs reordering? Every choice bears on the character of the house and on how it sits with what surrounds it.
Partial renovation exists so that living can happen more naturally. Drawings met site conditions and were drawn again; what was wanted met what was possible and moved. Comfort and privacy took shape in the details.
Rebuilding in places asks for patience, and for someone to carry it. Holding on to the first intention through the difficult choices lets the new rooms carry the gatherings to come, and be ready for long use.
Much of the effort ends up where a guest will never look; when everything sits right, living simply unfolds.
Private investor · Co-owner · Proprietor
Winson Chen holds the VILLA AURELAGO properties together with a few friends, bringing a private investor's long view, and takes part as proprietor in shaping what the house believes and how it receives people.
Investing taught him to watch for value over time; travel, music, art and the meetings between people led him to ask why one place is remembered at all.
For Winson the appeal of a house lives where architecture and living answer each other: the way light enters a room, the right distance between people together, the feeling of being carefully looked after and left free at once.
Five years of rebuilding made that conviction clearer. A good space needs time to become itself, patience with detail, and the will to hold the first intention through the difficult choices.
He would like VILLA AURELAGO to be a place with taste and with warmth alike: where friends gather, where families share their hours, and where travellers from anywhere find their own rhythm on the shore of Lake Como.
Held together, cared for together, so that the value of each house continues through time.
Careful arrangement, quiet attention: guests are understood, and keep their own space.
